Dress like we love …

Meeting with Tanguy Mulliez, International License Director of Daniel Hechter,  I discovered a passion for style that goes way back.

When Tanguy evoked a quote from Christophe Blandin, the artistic director of the Daniel Hechter brand, “On s’habille comme on s’aime”, meaning we dress like we love, I knew an inspiring interview had begun. So you can imagine how happy I was to learn that Daniel Hechter, famous international French brand, was going to open a new shop in Melbourne on 16th April. And on this occasion, obviously the brand needed to be present during the Fashion Festival; a successful event with the theme, “Savoir-Vivre” (The Art of Living Well), to celebrate the exclusive partnership with the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival and the launch of Melbourne’s first dedicated Daniel Hechter store.

After eight years in Australia operating out of their first shop in Perth, it was time for Melbourne to meet and fall in love with this brand. Daniel Hechter is determined to offer his best, urban or casual, and I know it’s going to be easy for ladies and men alike to find that particular style with a price that won’t stretch the purse strings.

The French fashion statements continue to flow, “La mode: un éternel recommencement” (fashion is in a state of perpetual renewal). As true as this is, we recognise that it has a special French touch being the amazing colour, this year a unique blue. The shape changes, the suits are shortened, more fitted and we slim everything, never forgetting the entity of the brand: the tie less large with collars smaller. Daniel Hechter plays with fine materials of a high quality, 100% cotton with a synthetic touch for the function follow fashion.

This lifestyle brand prêt-à-porter for men and soon for women, Daniel Hechter commenced his designing in 1962. He started his career dressing women, six years later he was showing the same talented style in men’s fashion. In France, he left his mark when he dressed Brigitte Bardot for the French movie, Les Valseuses, then continued this show of style with Sylvie Vartan and Johnny Hallyday.

Always very close to the stars, he took these same principles to the creation of prêt-à-porter, delivering the fashion to the streets, making it accessible to all - he was definitely involved in the development of his collections. Eternally passionate about sport, he was the first designer who launched a sports collection. His love of sport has also led him to the well-known football club PSG, for whom he designed the logo. The brand still dresses the team.

After many years, Daniel Hechter is mirrored the world over and proud to be in 66 countries thanks to his strength, his positioning, his image and clientele being people 30-50 years. His premium reference brand is already projected to open shops in Adelaide and Sydney followed by a vast program to be rolled out across 10 to 15 points of sale in the next 3 years.

Now, you know you can’t resist a rendez-vous with this new shop in Melbourne and I most definitely agree with him. Well done Daniel Hechter and I can’t wait to try on your beautiful and intriguing creations.

It’s been one year that I have been in Melbourne and I’m wondering if the past years were simply not a preparation for this enchanting adventure.

Back to the very beginning… After my trip to Vietnam - a trip that allowed reflecting on the meaning of life - I understood that it was time for me to leave France!
Indeed, France was no longer my motherland; I had had enough of it. I decided to raise anchor and cast off for Australia. I quit work, adjusted the administrative wretched papers and fare welled my family and my friends before departing ‘down under’.

Why did I choose Australia?
Well, during my trips, all of the ‘Aussies’ I had met had come out as optimistic and joyful. One of them was convinced that Melbourne would be my Promised Land. Off I went!
I landed on this unknown land with my two big suitcases, a packed handbag and this to make my life here.
I had no idea of what waited for me. Having never visited this country previously if it is not by the magic of web, I knew nobody, I spoke really mediocre English and tuned to the Australian accent, I understood quickly that school English wouldn’t be enough for me. Because let us be honest, here we need to speak Australian.

At 33 year-old, I found myself in backpacker mode, sharing a dormitory with 8 crazy girls. But no matter, I was in Australia - my Promised Land - and I understood at once that my choice was the best. Determined to meet people, staying in a hotel well known in St Kilda, the Barkly Hotel, it was obvious that if I wanted to meet people, I should go out. What was my surprise when I learnt that I was in the heart of the "nightlife". Indeed, I had only to take the elevator, to press 4 and to be plunged into the atmosphere of the Australian parties.

Knowing from now on when I could go out, it was time to move and to find a home, and a job. I shared a house with 10 people to notice quickly that my landlord was an opportunist. I also found waitress's job to notice also that everyone hated my boss. In brief, I found myself as a student. Ah yes because I also forgot to say to you that I study at the same time.

Let us recapitulate, an awful home, a job that pissed me off, no friends, at 16159 kilometers from France, no idea about what I was going to do here, a poor English, a feeling to be poor by comparing the prices with France and this irresistible desire for shopping and nevertheless, the happiest woman of the world.
This is when the heaven decided for me, yes yes you are reading well - the heaven - the roof of my room collapsed simply on my bed further to heavy rain, it was the sign to move and change few things. In tears, I called my only real Australian friend.

It is from this moment that my life in Oz changed. My Australian friend came, we took my stuff, and here I lived from now on with a couple of Australians who will become as a family. I had found an Aussie family: my sista and my bro. From then on, I improved my English, I understood better the culture and I met my Aussie friends. I decided to take my wages in the restaurant, tell some truths to my boss (yes then at this precise moment I was in French mood and let us say that I did not improve our reputation) and stop this damned job. No job, however I stayed confident because after all I was in Australia, my Promised Land, I was realizing my dream and I was convinced that something better, bigger, awesome gets ready for me.
The same day, I found a new job in a beautiful piano bar next to the restaurant. Before, I had become friends with the owners to such a point that one day I asked if he could find me a car. Done! After 3 days I received a message and a photo " This car is so you, Frenchy ". Indeed, a perfect red sport Mazda, I was positively thrilled. New job, new meetings of great people who will become my friends and everyone called me Frenchy - and oh my goodness, I loved it!

I was finally at home, my home!
One day you wake up and you know that you finally found the place " the place to be ", this moment is simply magic and I delight it every morning when I get up.

In brief working at night and the weekend, tired, wanting too to party and observe the world that surrounds me to understand my new country, I resigned. It was time to realize what was better match to me. Photographer, social media manager, marketing manager, sales representative, I dashed into a new adventure and a new challenge: create my business and become FREE-lance.
After all, Frenchy was now my name; In Australia, people like the French culture and my English allowed me from now on to communicate; I decided to create Fren'CHIC Touch, personal shopping and private concierge.

To summarise  after one year in Melbourne, I feel blessed to live my dream. A lot of friends in France found my choice a bit crazy but this fabulous adventure teaches me to exceed my fears and believe in my dreams.
The Aussies touch me every day by their kindness, their joy of life and this extraordinary ability to live now and only now. In Australia, I learn about myself and even if I exceed my fears, I have nevertheless always a fear, this fear - one day - to have to return in France. Maybe I am French but my soul mate is Melbourne. However, I stay confident and convinced that with a hard work, with the enthusiasm and always a positive thought, this beautiful love story can last all my life.

Lucky Frenchy !

I wanted and I could.
